Universities are often home to new inventions and processes that improve the quality of life for everyone. We are fortunate in Schertz to have various universities, colleges and research centers. These institutions of intellectual capital present enormous opportunities that are realized daily, as well as opportunities not yet dreamed of.
Various research centers call San Antonio their home and bring enormous amounts of intellectual capital and patents to the area. The Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) benefits government, industry and the public through innovative science and technology. The 60 year old center is an independent, nonprofit applied research and development organization. The staff of 3,000 specializes in the creation and transfer of technology in engineering and the physical sciences. The Institute holds more than 800 patents awarded to its staff members and has earned 30 R&D 100 awards.
The Research Imaging Center (RIC) is a University of Texas Laboratory dedicated to biomedical imaging research. The mission of the RIC is to perform basic and clinical research using noninvasive, biomedical imaging methods for measuring the structure and function of living organisms. Human neuroscience research will be given highest priority.
The Cancer Therapy & Research Center's facilities include two major campuses, and three satellite locations totaling 331,000 square feet and 43 acres. The main campus is a 327,000 square foot world-class, multi-disciplinary, academic cancer research and treatment center situated in the heart of San Antonio's South Texas Medical Center.
The San Antonio Cancer Institute (SACI) represents the combined cancer research programs of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) and Cancer Therapy and Research Center. Since the inception of the CTRC in 1974, the two institutions have continued a long and successful history of collaboration in cancer treatment and prevention research. The collaborations fostered by this Institute integrate the outpatient cancer services and the basic, preclinical and clinical research supported by the CTRC with the cancer-related scientific and academic programs of the UTHSCSA. The existence of SACI continues to ensure collaborative leadership and a strong focus for all cancer-related research conducted in or through these two institutions.
